Spaced out
You know it’s time to wrap up your post-doctoral stint when your hard-drive is full.
I’ve been in this lab a bit more than four years, having bought a MacBook Pro soon after my arrival. This morning, I tried to perform a software update and was informed that the start-up disk did not contain enough room.
I think this is a fitting metaphor for something.
Time to delete and make space for something new?
In my brain? Amen.
I remember trying to write my thesis on a shared PowerMac (oh goodness, the glory days…). I attempted to use Photoshop to crop a scan of a blot, and was presented with an “out of disk space for swapfile” message or something similar. The enormous hard disk, which was probably all of 1 Gigabyte or so, was 98% full… of everybody else’s crap.
Nothing that couldn’t be rectified by counting up Mb used by each lab, then posting the totals in various conspicuous places… 😉
I didn’t know they had electricity back then.

wow. Would that be pics taking up lots of space then? I can’t imagine my hard drive being full… although, I know that my photos of mice take up a LOT of space…. hmmm… maybe need to look into that?!
Bah upon your electricity comment… although I will cop to using photographs and gluing them in. My fellow student scanned all of his and inserted them into the text (just imagine!), but this was such early days that he had to do each chapter separately and link all the documents together to make the final thesis. If he’d tried to do it as one monolithic document, filled with scanned gel photos… the computer would surely have exploded.
